Love at First

Love at first
was such a sight
I had to close my eyes
it cast me in the lead
and rewrote all my lines
I played the scenes to different faces
found myself in places I can’t recognize

Love at first
rang the alarm
and then set me on fire
it burned me to the ground
and never told me why
left me in ashes, charred and crazed
and still I was amazed to find I couldn’t die

Pulled in my horns and swore
I wouldn’t wear them any more
boxed up my heart and started
            checking it at every door

Love at first
took me to school
and taught its lessons fast
it promised me a future
but left it in the past
so sadder, wiser than at first
I’m ready now to come around to love at last
